Montana State Parks recently introduced a new license plate design featuring the Seeley Lake-area Placid Lake State Park; and a painting by Montana artist Monte Dolack.
The plate is the result of a partnership with the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Foundation, with proceeds benefitting state parks. And with resources stretched thin, Parks officials say that financial support is essential
The new plate features the Dolack painting titled “Placid Lake Sunset“. In it, a woman and her dog are quietly paddling in a canoe as the sun drops, painting the lake in hues of red and orange behind them.
Dolack says some of his earliest memories are of his family’s visits to Giant Springs State Park near Great Falls.
Just across the river was the Anaconda Copper Mining Company’s copper smelter and immense smokestack. Dolack says he remembers Giant Springs as a refreshing place to go.

Montana State Parks last plate design was introduced 10 years ago and has recently been generating about 12-thousand-dollars annually. The agency receives no hunting and fishing licensing dollars and no money from the state general fund. Its largest source of funding is through an optional $6-dollar annual vehicle registration fee paid by Montana residents.
