Gun control continues to be nationally debated in the wake of the most recent mass shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school. As part of the Montana Public Media “Guns in the Big Sky” series, Montana Public Radio recently aired a live, one-hour discussion of whether new gun control legislation is necessary, or simply a knee jerk reaction to tragedy. News Director Sally Mauk hosted the discussion, featuring four panelists: hunters Doug Webber and Ed Monnig, Dana Gale of “Moms Demand Action”, and Ravalli County Sheriff Chis Hoffman. Listeners also submitted questions online. The discussion covered everything from universal background checks to banning semi-automatic weapons.
Well done discussion and moderation. I have a background that might be useful for proactive ‘next steps’ but I’m not sure who to contact. I have worked with police, juvenile justice programs, federal probation, mental health centers, hospitals, child protection programs, county administrators, schools, at-risk youth and families. I live in Missoula county but also work in Mineral, Ravalli, Lake, Sanders, and Mineral counties. I have consulted on these issues in four different states (Washington, California, Montana, and Colorado). I am mental health specialist and an emergency management specialist. I’ve lived through a lot of disasters and near-miss events. And I love Montana.
Considering that no gun control measure in America has ever decreased crime, and many have made it worse, why are anti-gun nuts not laughed at?
As usual, Montana sounds like something out of the 19th century in its attitude toward gun control. I learned to shoot handguns and rifles at age 5. I am now 71 years old. I don’t like to kill things, so I shot skeet. Got pretty good, too. I don’t think any of us growing up had a clue about what a mess gun ownership would become in the United States. We’ve got to start somewhere to put the brakes on who owns guns and why. If you are a law-abiding citizen, I can’t imagine why a gun registry is such a big deal. It’s at least a place to start.
