Women and men around the world, including in Missoula, gathered today to call for an end to violence against women as part of a global event called “One Billion Rising.” About 300 people attended the noon rally in the University of Montana oval, which featured speakers and a flash mob dance.
Co-organizer Tarn Ream says the event is intended to bring awareness to the fact that, globally, one in three women faces being beaten or raped.
“The other part of it is, it’s a great way to start a conversation,” Ream said. “So if you can have a little fun dancing, or watching a dance, even if it’s a serious topic, now we can start the conversation.”
Flash mobs were held in cities around the world this week, calling for an end to the epidemic of violence against women.
