Even with training and the proper gear avalanches still take the lives of back country enthusiasts each winter. An avalanche in February in the Jewel Basin took the life of 42-year-old Mark Albee of Bigfork. By all accounts Albee was a skilled back country skier, familiar with the area, and skiing with his brother, also skilled in back country safety. The incident report says they were standing in what should have been a safe place when the snow slide occurred. In the wake of the tragedy Katrin Frye reports his family stresses the importance of safety, in living to ski another day.
